Wall clocks with timeless appeal

Let's go back in time for a moment. Clocks have been a highly prized item for millennia. In Ancient Egypt, shadow clocks were constructed to tell the time using the position of the sun. Ancient sailors used hourglasses that were prized for their accuracy, thanks to the relative consistency of sand. The first home clocks – pendulum clocks – were conceptualised by Galileo and invented by Christian Huygens, a Dutch astronomer, in 1656. They were highly prized by the elite, but would not become affordable and accessible to the masses until the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Today, wall clocks are mostly battery-operated and found in a wide variety of shapes, designs and colours to suit any décor. Whether you’re filling an empty space in your home office, want something to replace your alarm clock on your bedside table, or installing practical décor for your store, a decorative wall clock is practical and modern wall art for any room of the home. Find your perfect clock by shopping online with Artiss.

Wall clock FAQ

Where to hang a wall clock?

First, think about which room of the house would benefit the most from a clock. Where do you need to check the time the most? If you're always in a rush in the morning, a wall clock displayed on a kitchen wall might help things along. If you spend a lot of time in your home office, a clock can help keep track of the day. Wherever you find yourself constantly checking the time and wishing you had a watch, you should place a clock.

How high should wall clocks be hung?

Clocks work best at two heights: between eye and chest level, or above eye level. You may like to measure a wall clock to hang above a mantel, couch, bed or desk. We recommend you measure at least four inches between the clock and surrounding furniture or openings.

If you are hanging a large or heavy wall clock, you should hang it from the studs within your wall, or anchor screws if you have brick or concrete walls. Use a stud finder to locate your studs before committing to a location.

How can I get the most accurate time?

Some clocks are more accurate than others due to the inner mechanisms.

Pendulum clocks (such as grandfather clocks or cuckoo clocks) are still considered one of the most accurate timekeeping devices. They are commonly only off by a half second per day, roughly 1 in 150,000 parts.

Quartz clocks followed as the next best measurement, using the vibrations of a quartz crystal connected to an electrical circuit to count a second. These became more streamlined, accessible and affordable for most households before the invention of battery operated and digital clocks. Battery operated clocks are accurate to within a few seconds a day, while quartz clocks are accurate to within 20 seconds per month.

Atomic clocks are the most accurate type of clock and measures the length of a second in atomic oscillations. These clocks have an average error of up to one second every 100 million years. As well as the most accurate, they are the most expensive type of clock.

Why is my clock running slower?

There are several things you can do to maintain the life of your clock.

If your clock starts to run slow, first check the battery compartment. There may be a build-up of dust, dirt or corrosion preventing the battery from working, or it may need replacing. Clean the compartment and replace the battery, making sure to correctly line up the positive and negative terminals.

Check the clock hands to make sure they are ticking over normally. Check they are correctly positioned, none of the hands are warped or bent, and none of the hands are touching.

If the clock is still not accurate, the movement (the mechanism that makes the hands tick) may need to be replaced. Replacement movements can be easily found on Amazon and eBay (check your product manual for specifications), or you can visit the manufacturer's site for spare parts.
